One of the latest trends in Hollywood is adapting YA dystopian novels to movies and it has been going all so well with the likes of The Maze Runner and Divergent. That being said, Divergent franchise’s last installation Allegiant did not do so well.
This ended by Lionsgate cutting the budget for Ascendent, the next and fourth movie of the franchise. They also announced their plans to end the franchise with a television movie which might allow the story to be told in more detail subsequently within the world of Divergent in a spin-off TV series. The cast of Divergent was ot informed about the decision regarding the TV movie and one of the leading stars of the movie, Shailene Woodley clearly stated the same and talked about if she would join the TV continuation.
Woodley was asked about the Ascendant and what she thought about the final Divergent film in an interview she had with Screen Rant. Here is her answer
Last I heard they were trying to make it into a television show. I didn’t sign up to be in a television show. Out of respect to the studio and everyone in involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.
From what we heard Lionsgate is already marketing the TV movie and the possible spin-off to networks. Let us wait and see where the story ends. We hope that these efforts do not ruin the whole franchise.
